HEALTHY, CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS
WE WORK CLOSELY WITH A WIDE MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM TO MEET THE NEEDS OF AND PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE FROM OUR LEARNERS.
We recognise the importance of this holistic team and ensure that we all work together to support our learners in any way that they need.
This team includes parents, education staff, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, social services, dietitians, community nurses, paediatrician and local charities. We meet regularly throughout the year to ensure that we all know the direction that the learner is heading, and all support this direction in any way possible.
TEACHING & LEARNING
IN DISCOVERY, WE FOLLOW THE SPECIALIST EQUALS CURRICULUM.
We have several Key Stage 3 classes which meet our range of needs, focusing on sensory needs and on promoting communication using speech, sign and AAC strategies. Our learners then move on to the 14+ curriculum where it is more life skills focused and works on skills learners will need when they leave school. Specialist facilities to support learning include a multisensory room, hydrotherapy pool, inclusive kitchen space and a sensory garden. We also make use of local facilities to support community inclusion.
ETHICAL INFORMED CITIZENS
WE RECOGNISE AND UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO PLAN FOR AND WORK TOWARDS THE NEXT STEPS WHEN OUR LEARNERS REACH 19 AND LEAVE OUR SCHOOL.
We work closely with families and Careers Wales from Year 9 to plan and prepare learners for the next steps, we have a college links programme which sees our learners attending college regularly as they get older and, as the time comes, we work closely with colleges to support transition and ensure that all relevant information is passed on to support a safe and happy onward transition for all involved.
